Vietnam: Biotechnology and Other New Production Technologies Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)   |   VM2026-0047
This report updates Vietnam’s regulatory frameworks for plant, animal, and microbial biotechnology, including the approval of genetically engineered (GE) crops for food, feed, and cultivation. In 2025–2026, Vietnam introduced its most significant biotechnology reforms since 2010, revising the definition of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), establishing a self-determination process for gene-edited crops, and streamlining food and feed approval procedures. The reforms also extend the validity of marketing authorizations for GE corn hybrids to up to 20 years.
