Food for Peace

The Food for Peace program benefits American farmers and producers through purchases of bulk and formulated U.S. agricultural commodities furnished to provide emergency food assistance to address famine, food crises, and acute food insecurity. Food for Peace moves U.S. commodities to countries in need to provide life-saving emergency food assistance while ensuring that the strategic priorities of the United States are met.

Food for Peace joins USDA’s portfolio of longstanding food assistance programs with proven records of effective administration, the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program and Food for Progress.

USDA requires all stakeholders of its international food assistance programs to adopt the following reforms: commodities procured must be 100% U.S. origin; strict accountability measures to prevent fraud, waste, abuse, and diversion must be instituted; and long-term dependency on foreign aid will be reduced.

USDA’s international food assistance programs, combined with trade-capacity building efforts, support long-term economic development and help countries transition from food aid recipients to commercial buyers.
